Third Class learned all about the artist Romero Britto and created leaves inspired by his art work!

Chinese New Year - February 5th

February 5th is the start of Chinese New Year 2019! We looked at the differences between how we celebrate New Year in Ireland compared to how New Year is celebrated in China.

2019 is the year of the pig!

The Chinese Zodiac, known as Sheng Xiao, is based on a 12 year cycle, each year has a different animal. These signs are: RAT OX TIGER RABBIT  SNAKE HORSE DRAGON  SHEEP MONKEY ROOSTER DOG and PIG. 

We read a story about how these 12 animals were chosen. 

In the 15th day of New Year, there is the Lantern Festival, which includes parades and dragon dances. We made dragons in art!!

St. Brigid’s Crosses - February 1st

On Friday, the 1st of February, it was St. Brigid's Day. We learned lots about St. Brigid. We learned about her childhood, her young adult years and how she continued to spread Christianity throughout her life.

We read a story about St. Brigid's cloak and coloured in pictures of her.

We learned about the origin of the St. Brigid's Cross and some of the traditions that go along with it.

We also made St. Brigid's Crosses out of straws, we found it quite tricky and our little fingers were sore from all the pinching!!!!!!! But they turned out great! Here are our finished crosses:

Martin Luther King Jr Day - January 21st

On the 21st of January, people in the US celebrated Martin Luther King Day. Children in American schools had a holiday day to honour Dr. King. While we didn’t get a day off school in Ballybrack!!!!.... we did learn a lot about  Martin Luther King.

Some facts we learned were:

• Martin Luther King Jr was born in the United States of America to African American parents. At birth he was named Michael King, but his father later changed his name to Martin Luther King Jr.
• When Martin Luther King was growing up, black people had different schools, toilets and even sections of the bus to white people, this was called 'segregation'. They were also denied the right to vote in elections.
• Martin Luther King was so clever, he skipped two grades in school.
• Martin Luther King Jr became a minister.
• Martin was a great believer in peaceful protest, inspired by the Indian activist Mahatma Gandhi. His protests used no-violent tactics.
• In 1963, Martin gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, at a famous rally named ‘March on Washington.’ 
• In October 1964, Martin won the Nobel Peace Prize!

Martin Luther King wanted equal civil rights for everyone, regardless of their race, gender or class. 

.      

For art, we worked together to create this collaborative portrait of Martin Luther King. We used oil pastels to make it. 

We wrote and drew some of the information we’d learned about Dr. King. 

New Year 2019 🎉

We had a great first term in Third Class! When we came back to school in January, we decided to think of some New Years Resolutions. We thought about something we wanted to do, something we needed to do, something we wanted to be better at and something we wanted to learn! Let’s see how we get on this year with our resolutions!!!

Christmas Art

We were very busy in the run up to Christmas, especially with all our rehearsals for our Nativity Play! It was a very exciting time in our class!! Here is some of the art we did to decorate our corridor:

Procedural Writing - We made Hot Chocolate! ☕️

In November, as part of our First Steps programme, we were learning about procedural writing. We went to the computer room to research  how to make hot chocolate! We looked at all the equipment required and what steps we needed to follow!

We then headed to the kitchen and made hot chocolate! It was one of our favourite Literacy lessons!!!! We got to relax in the staff room and drink our hot chocolate.
